Inkwell-II Acrylic Painting Canvas Art Beach Abstract inspired by Inkwell Beach in Oak Bluffs which is a town located on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. It is one of two principal arrival points for the swell of summer tourists. It is also famous for the extremely colorful gingerbread cottages and the outdoor tabernacle. Oak Bluffs is noted for its “gingerbread cottages” and its other well preserved late 19th century structures.
This is the second of two paintings inspired by Inkwell beach in Oak Bluffs, where affluent African Americans from New York, Boston, and Washington would visit, seeing as Oak Bluffs was the only Martha’s Vineyard town that welcomed black tourists as other towns on the island did not allow black guests to stay in inns and hotels until the 1960s.
I was fortunate to have visited Oak Bluffs in late summer 2016 with my family. Our stay was a week long, with the beach located less than one city block from our painted cottage. I spent much of my time walking to and from the beach to enjoy the view. It is a vacation that will always be a special memory. Check out the first Inkwell inspired painting here.
