As the Spring of 2014 rolled around, I came to the conclusion that my pond was in desperate needed of a makeover. Hubs (who wishes to remain anonymous) became extremely frustrated with it, he threatened to “fill her full of dirt” and be done with it all. In my opinion there was no valid reason for committing such an act. Especially not after having looked at these pictures of my pond in her glory days. This pond sat proud and pretty in her past.
In her hay day, she was decked out with a vast array of plants, all perennials. We gathered and lugged some interesting rocks from around the property and put them around the edge for some interest. It really was a pleasure to sit next to her on a nice summer evening.
Below, you can see what has happened over the years. The pond started to lose water due to weeds. We initially installed a drain pipe because the water level was high, and when it rained it would top the bank and flood the yard and driveway. After the weeds set themselves in, the water level remained well below the pipe. They suck up a tremendous amount of water.
How did it get so bad? Well with no time for upkeep and actually too many plants around the pond, the weeds began to take over, and then all we could do was look at it and say “Need To. . . clean this up”. For clarity, “Need To” is the other resident in the house who never gets the job done. At a loss as to what to do next, the pond continued to degrade.
We also lost most of the plants one year due to a really cold winter without much snow cover. They required weeding constantly, and I am not that girl! Hubs used to do all that gardening stuff. But now, my plan is to take on this crazy pond project myself.
I have been working feverishly since the final snow melt to get this pond back into shape. This will be an ongoing effort and ongoing post with updates on the progress of her makeover. I’m looking to clean it up, add dye (creature safe – the frogs will testify) and add a fountain!
I don’t know how this is going to end, but I know I’ve got some good stuff in store for this pond.
Do you have a crazy pond project or water feature of your own that needs an upgrade? I
