I have used many beauty products containing shea butter, some which worked really well, and some not so much. I was excited to try Cleopatra’s 100% pure African shea butter, because shea is very effective in moisturizing and hydrating the skin. It also contains healing properties and is great for skin irritations, extreme dryness and sunburns. You can even use it on your hair! Read on to find out just how good this stuff really is!
I did a little research on pure unrefined shea butter and learned that the purest and preferred form of shea is Grade A. It has the highest concentration of vitamin A and vitamin E. However, you have to be careful from whom and where you buy shea butter, because there are some sellers who claim Grade A, but the product is usually refined or simply inferior. Beware and do your research when purchasing online.
My shea butter finally arrived and I opened the container, and admittedly I was a bit confused. It came in a plastic container, much like a small take out container. It is ivory in color and very dense. I scooped up an amount the size of a quarter and let it soften up from the heat of my hands. Once melted, I applied it all over my body and and my skin felt really soft and nicely moisturized. The smell reminds me of a really good cocoa butter, or a mix or cocoa butter and chocolate. Not offensive at all.
One caveat is that this does not go on quite as smooth as a lotion or cream, but if you soften it sufficiently and apply it, you will notice a difference in the softness and smoothness of your skin. This shea butter is really good for dry skin. One thing I learned is not to use the shea butter immediately after a shower, because your hands will not have enough heat to melt it and makes it harder to apply. The shea butter has a slightly gritty feel until it is fully melted and softened, so don’t skip this step. If you wish, you can place it in a microwave safe dish and heat it for 20-30 seconds and then apply to your skin.
This is a fair trade product which means it is produced female subsistence farmers In Ghana, Africa who are paid a fair wage, enabling them to support their families, attain higher education, and realize their rights as women.
